EU Green Week is an annual opportunity to debate, become familiar with, or even celebrate EU environment policy. It is an opportunity to celebrate the progress that was made, and to encourage individuals, communities and organisations to take stronger action in future – to protect, preserve and restore our environment, for now and for future generations, while constantly promoting sustainable development.
EU WeMED_NaTOUR was promoted during the EU Green Week partner event- organised by the project coordinator X23. The insightful and wonderful event gathered like-minded people who mostly are engaged in the tourism sector. The event was packed with knowledge in the blue and green economy sectors. The keynote speakers: Ioannis Pappas from Green Evolution, Flavio Tagliabue from Startup Turismo, Patice Talaue from Green Destination, and Marika Mazzi Boém from X23, touched on various topics concerning the sustainable tourism industry, blue economy, cruise sector, green tourism.
Let’s take a look at the highlights from the event… ✨
The event is highly focused on Blue, Green, and Digital knowledge and skills. The first keynote speaker Dr. Ioannis Pappas compared the threats from coastal tourism different coastal tourism typologies cause; the creative relationship between the “tourism ecosystem”, Destination Managers, and Cruise Operators, and also highlighted the responsibility of Cruise tourism.
According to the audience, which are mostly tourism key players, one of the challenges tourism SMEs find when green transitioning their business is the lack of resources or support. Project Manager from X23, Amal Muntaser, then introduced the opportunities that the SMEs can seize… financial-wise and also capacity building-wise. Alongside other EU projects: EU ECO-TANDEM; EU DigiTOUR; ECO-CRUISING FU_TOUR; and Guide Me Green, EU WeMED_NaTOUR was presented.
The Capacity Building Programme designed by EU WeMED_NaTOUR is a specialised online training course that will provide the tourism SMEs in the West Mediterranean knowledge in marine and tourism-related policies and actions; also increase the digital competencies. The programme not only targets the tourism SMEs, but also targets schools and teachers as complementary components for the eco-smart packages, which is the second project activity.
The event then went on with an interactive session hosted by Claudia Iglesias and Amal Muntaser. The participants were asked to share their biggest challenges when Green transitioned their business, then the audience was divided into breakout rooms to discuss the solution to the identified issues. It was a great way for the participants to share their experiences and provide inputs that expand the conversation.
After the interactive session, Flavio Tagliabue from Startup Turismo used AI technology to voice over, translating in real-time- Italian to English, giving a first-hand experience on the magic and wonder of the capacity of technology. Flavio touched on the importance of using technology in tourism, and how intertwined technology and the new era of tourism is.
Patice Talaue then took the floor, talking about the green decisions enterprises are taking. There are barriers and gaps to going green. Education is one of the strongest bridges to the gap. The DGI Tourism was presented on how it is boosting sustainable thinking in vocational education and training in tourism.
Lastly, Marika Mazzi Boém, a certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitator presented the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® creative thinking method. It is a new method of thinking and problem solving, as the conventional way of problem-solving sometimes lacks the efficiency and result. However, with the highly hands-on and practical approach, problem-solving becomes easier and more efficient.
The event was closed with a fruitful discussion and knowledge boost. We appreciate all the participants who joined with the same aim- to make the Mediterranean a more sustainable and resilient place!
